Handytech's over-ring and under-ring accelerators, paired with the vertical brake, move acceleration and braking to the steering-wheel area for drivers who find pedals difficult, painful or impossible to use safely. We fit and configure the system around your vehicle, strength, reach and driving routine from our Hemel Hempstead workshop.

Accelerator and brake controls fitted around you
Handytech's paraplegia range covers over-ring and under-ring steering-wheel accelerators alongside the vertical brake, giving drivers a choice of hand-operated setups depending on how they prefer to sit, reach and grip.
We assess your vehicle, seating position, hand strength and movement before recommending a setup. The electronics are designed to interface with the vehicle's original systems without altering safety features such as airbags, steering-wheel adjustment or cruise control.

Over-ring accelerator
A ring fitted over the steering wheel gives gradual acceleration as it is pressed down towards the wheel. It is available with leather upholstery in a choice of colours and matte-black trim, and can be adjusted to suit a wide range of vehicles.

Handytech accelerator ring
Under-ring accelerator
Fitted to the lower part of the steering wheel, this ring is pushed up towards the wheel to accelerate, leaving the upper part of the wheel completely free. That keeps wheelchair transfers, use by other nominated drivers and loading the wheelchair into the vehicle easier.

Handytech brake control
Vertical brake
The vertical brake is operated with a simple forward push of the lever. It is not connected to the steering column, preserving room to move a wheelchair across to the seat while leaving knee airbags and steering-wheel adjustment unaffected. It can sit to the left or right of the horn and pairs with either Handytech accelerator ring.

Handytech accelerator rings and the vertical brake are available through the Motability Scheme where the adaptation is suitable for you and your vehicle. They can also be supplied and fitted as a private purchase.

Common questions
Are Handytech accelerator rings available through Motability?
Yes. Handytech's over-ring and under-ring accelerators and the vertical brake are available through the Motability Scheme where the adaptation is suitable for your vehicle and driving needs.
What is the difference between the over-ring and under-ring accelerator?
The over-ring accelerator sits above the steering wheel and is pressed down to accelerate. The under-ring accelerator sits beneath the wheel and is pushed up to accelerate, leaving the top of the wheel clear for transfers. The best option depends on your grip, hand position and vehicle.
Can the vertical brake be fitted with either accelerator ring?
Yes. The vertical brake pairs with either the over-ring or under-ring accelerator, and the controls can be set up so acceleration is disabled during the final stage of braking.
Can someone else still drive the car?
In many cases the original pedal controls can remain available for nominated drivers, but this depends on the vehicle and exact control layout. We will confirm this during assessment.
