If turning the wheel takes more strength than you have to spare, Steering Developments can lighten your power steering — customised to exactly how much effort feels right for you, from a little lighter to feather-light. Fitted at our Hemel Hempstead workshop, serving drivers across Hertfordshire including St Albans, Watford and Luton.

What is Power Steering Lightening?
Power Steering Lightening is an SDL modification made directly to your vehicle's existing steering rack or column, reducing how much effort it takes to turn the wheel. It works on both hydraulic and electric power steering systems, and there's no universal kit involved — every job is carried out on your specific vehicle.
We assess your strength and steering needs first, by phone consultation and in person, so the amount of lightening we apply matches you — not a generic setting.

One thing to know before you go ahead
Power Steering Lightening is a permanent modification to your steering rack or column. Once it's been lightened, it can't be reversed without fitting a replacement rack — so we'll always talk through the level of lightness with you carefully during your assessment, to make sure it's right before we carry out the work.

Is Power Steering Lightening available on the Motability Scheme?
Yes. As a Motability Stage 2 modifier, SDL can fit Power Steering Lightening as part of your Motability adaptations package.
Can Power Steering Lightening be reversed?
No — it's a permanent modification to your steering rack or column, and the only way to undo it is to fit a replacement rack. We'll talk through the level of lightness with you carefully during assessment so you're confident before any work is carried out.
Will lighter steering feel strange to another driver?
It can. Because the steering is set to your strength specifically, it will feel normal to you but noticeably lighter to someone else — worth bearing in mind if more than one person drives the vehicle.
Does this work with my type of power steering?
Power Steering Lightening can be applied to both hydraulic and electric power steering systems. We'll confirm suitability for your specific vehicle during assessment.
Do I need to bring my car to your workshop?
Usually yes, but in some cases you can send us the steering rack or column to be modified and returned — we'll advise which applies to your vehicle during your consultation.
How do I know how light I need my steering?
