Driving Controls - Foot Steering

Who can benefit from these systems?
For clients who cannot use their hands to operate a steering wheel, there is another way...

SDL’s amazing Foot Steering systems.
These types of steering systems have been fitted by SDL for over 15years, for clients with the following disabilities: - Thalidomide, Congenital Limb Deformity, Arthrogryposis, loss of upper limbs and Cerebral Palsy.

This shows a typical ‘left foot’ steering system where by the “foot plate” location device mirrors the sole of the shoe to provide a positive location.

The steering works by pivoting the foot location device by the heel by ± 6 degrees.

The right foot is used to operate the brake and gas pedals in the normal way.

This shows a typical Joystick Steering device being operated by the right foot with the special joystick lever located in between the toes to provide good fine control.

The fine control is achieved by careful location of the foot and heel into a cradle which provides a ‘reference point’ to determine the steering characteristics.

This view shows the position of the brake and gas pedals in relationship to the ‘Foot Steering Joystick’.

Note the ‘left foot gas pedal’, which completes the adaptations on this vehicle.

Close up view of ‘foot operated’ touch pad switches to operate front and rear screen wipers, screen wash and indicators with two additional touch pads carefully located to switch on the lights.

Please Note:
  1. All types of foot steering can be set to suit each individual’s strength and range of movement, to ensure a truly individual steering control.
  2. This device can also be placed on either the right or left hand side, dependent on the individual.
  3. All foot steering systems incorporate a secondary steering back-up system to ensure complete safety.
